About

Built in Toronto, for Toronto grocery bills.

Cartly started with a simple frustration: the same groceries cost noticeably different amounts depending on where you buy them — and finding the cheapest option meant checking store after store, by hand.

The idea

Groceries are one of the biggest lines in a household budget, and prices for identical products swing widely between stores — sometimes by dollars on a single item. Those differences are public; they’re just scattered. Cartly gathers them into one place so you can see, for the exact product you want, what it costs at every store we track — and choose for yourself.

Cartly does not sell groceries, and there is no checkout in Cartly. We compare; you decide where to shop.

Our mission

To make grocery prices transparent — every price labelled with its store and its platform, and the date it was seen — so that a fair price is something you can check, not something you have to trust.

How we get prices

We collect the prices that Toronto & GTA stores list on Instacart and DoorDash, and we match products like-for-like — the same product, the same package size — so comparisons are honest. Prices are refreshed from fresh observations on a regular cycle.

Two things we never blur:

  • Labelling. Every price in Cartly is labelled with its store and its platform — Instacart or DoorDash — because the same store can charge two different prices on the two platforms. A price without its source is only half the story.
  • Dates. Prices are observations, not promises. Whenever we publish a price story, it carries the dates the prices were observed, because prices vary by store and day and may have changed since.

We also keep two answers separate that are easy to confuse: Best Price is the lowest sticker price; Best Value is the best price per unit. They are different questions, and Cartly shows them as different answers.

Where we are

Cartly is in testing. The iPhone app is available through a public Apple TestFlight, and the web app is open at app.cartlyapp.ca — both free while we test. We are building in the open: our price-watch series, The Gap, publishes real observed prices with their dates, and testers’ reports of wrong prices are checked and fixed. A full public launch comes when the testing says we’re ready.
